The School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol invites applications for a 12-month postdoctoral research associate position within the MicroLab research group led by Dr Christopher Williamson. MicroLab specialises in measuring and modelling the relationships between microbial communities, biogeochemical cycles and physical processes, with particular expertise in algal research.

The successful candidate will work on the project ‘Smart Catchment Management through Embedded Predictive Analytics’, funded by Dwr Cymru Welsh Water to address the challenge of predicting taste and odour metabolite production by cyanobacterial communities within freshwater reservoirs. This will be a computer-based modelling project that will integrate historical datasets into both regression-based and machine-learning approaches in order to produce robust predictive tools that provide an early warning system for preventative or targeted response management.

We are particularly interested in applicants working at the intersection between microbiology and data-science, with demonstrable experience in algal/cyanobacterial research within aquatic systems desirable.

The School of Geographical Sciences is the only UK Geography department to be rated first in every Research Assessment Exercise and the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
