The University of Bristol is seeking to appoint to a fixed-term Lectureship in French from 1 August 2020 to 31 August 2021 (Grade J, Profile B, Pathway 3). This is a 0.6 fractional post and the salary range is £38,017 - £42,792 (pro rata per annum).

The Department of French is an integral part of a dynamic and forward-looking School of Modern Languages in the Faculty of Arts. The Department is at the forefront of those in the UK able to offer a range of modules from the medieval to the postmodern, encompassing Francophone cultural studies, film, history, literature, sociolinguistics and thought. French is studied by highly qualified and strongly motivated undergraduates either as a mandatory part of a Single Honours degree, a Joint Honours degree with another one or two modern languages, or a Joint Honours degree with another subject.

An ability to offer research-led teaching across the broad range of French Studies and contribute to the existing choice of undergraduate units offered by the French Department is essential and a specialism in theatre will be a particular asset.  Other teaching duties will include final-year translation into English, French grammar, some contribution to the Masters in Comparative Literatures and Cultures, and participation in the delivery of the MA Applied Translation classes. Knowledge of translation theory and advanced French language skills are desirable. The successful candidate will support the Department and School in the development of innovative teaching methods and materials, including through distance learning, and the dissemination of good teaching practice and will make an appropriate administrative contribution to the life of the School (as an academic tutor, for example).

The successful candidate will have native or near-native competence in French and English, and is likely to have, or be about to obtain, a relevant postgraduate qualification (PhD) and to have experience of teaching in the HE sector.

Interviews will be held in the week commencing 29 June 2020.

Applications must be made using the University of Bristol’s on-line application system. The closing date is 15 June 2020.  Informal enquiries should be directed to the Head of Subject, Prof. Gino Raymond at Gino.Raymond@bristol.ac.uk or the Head of School, Prof. Andreas Schönle at a.schonle@bristol.ac.uk
