Chair (W2) of Mammalian Diversity

The International University Institute (IHI) Zittau, a Central Academic Unit of the TU Dresden, and the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research are seeking to fill the position of a

Chair (W2) of Mammalian Diversity

combined with the

Head of Zoology Department and Head of Section Mammalogy

at Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz (SMNG),

starting February 1st, 2021.

The Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (SGN) is a member of the Leibniz Association and is one of the most important research institutions in the field of geobiodiversity. At its eleven locations throughout Germany, scientists from more than 180 nations conduct state-of-the-art research at an international level. At the Görlitz site, SGN operates the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz (SMNG) with research departments in the fields of zoology, soil zoology and botany and cooperates closely with TU Dresden in research and teaching in these fields of activity.

At the TU Dresden you are responsible to strengthen the research area in the field dedicated above. To this intend, a second affiliation with the Faculty of Biology is being sought, while existing partnerships with the Faculty of Environmental Sciences are to be expanded in the long term. You will be involved in teaching the English-language MSc courses "Biodiversity and Collection Management" and "Ecosystem Services" at IHI Zittau, which are largely supported by Senckenberg. We therefore expect you to be willing and capable of teaching courses in English and to participate in academic selfadministration.

At SMNG you will be involved in the general administration of the institute. You will also be responsible for the management, coordination and overall curatorial responsibility for the Zoology Section as well as for the development and research of the vertebrate collections of the SMNG assigned to the section of Mammalogy. As head of the Mammalogy Section of SMNG, you are responsible for the section's integrative research on the organismic, genetic and functional diversity of mammals. This research will focus in particular on biodiversity changes during the Anthropocene in functionally important, threatened and/or invasive species. The research should cover fundamental as well as applied aspects. The whole range of modern and innovative methods, both in the processing of collections and in the analysis of applied questions, is to be used. The biogeographical focus is on the Palaearctic - in addition to Europe, one focus should be the Central Asian region (Mongolia, China, Himalayas). Tasks also include communicating Senckenberg's research in the Science and Society programme area; this includes, among other things, the development of international exhibitions, the instruction of citizens' scientists (Citizen Science) and political consulting (e. g. Senckenberg Research on the return of the wolf).

We are seeking a candidate who can demonstrate experience in the research and assessment of mammals as important indicators of biodiversity loss and who can contribute with innovative methods to the further expansion of integrative biodiversity research at Senckenberg. Networking in the field of wildlife biology as well as close relationships with relevant professional associations are desirable. We place great emphasis on an excellent international publication activity. In addition, management and personnel experience of research groups and experience in the acquisition of third-party funds as well as in the strategic planning and implementation of research and development projects are expected. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG)

If you have any further questions, please contact the head of the appointment committee of election, Prof. Dr. Martin Hofrichter, tel. +49 3583 612 4121; email: martin.hofrichter@tu-dresden.de and on the part of SMNG the Director of SMNG, Prof. Dr. Willi Xylander, tel. +49 3581 4760 5110, email: willi.xylander@senckenberg.de.

TU Dresden and Senckenberg Society for Nature Research seek to employ more female professors. Hence, we particularly encourage women to apply. Applications from candidates with disabilities or those requiring additional support are very welcome. The University is a certified family-friendly university and offers a dual career service. Please send your application with a curriculum vitae in table form, a description of your scientific career, an outline of ideas for integrating the chair in research, teaching and transfer and a concept for the development of the associated academic collections, a structured list of publications, copies of the five most important publications, a list of your previous academic teaching activities including the results of teaching evaluations (preferably of the last three years), a list of successfully acquired third-party funds, a certified copy of the certificate of the highest academic degree obtained and a letter in which you explain your motivation for applying, by 18.06.2020 (stamped arrival date of the TU Dresden applies) to: TU Dresden, IHI Zittau, Director Prof. Dr. Thorsten Claus, Markt 23, 02763 Zittau and in electronic form (CD, USB storage medium or via the SecureMail Portal of the TU Dresden, https://securemail.tu-dresden.de to direktor.ihi@tu-dresden.de). In the course of further proceedings, the documents will also be available to the board of directors of the Senckenberg Gesellschaft for Natural Research and the head of SMNG.
