Closing date for applications 21-Jun-2020

We are seeking to recruit a statistician or health economist with an interest in applied statistical methods for evidence synthesis to work within the Guidelines Technical Support Unit (TSU) based in Bristol (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/population-health-sciences/centres/cresyda/mpes/nice/). The TSU provides technical support and training to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Centre for Guidelines.  As the successful applicant you will join the TSU team to work with guideline developers to perform Bayesian network meta-analysis  and support the use of other appropriate statistical methods for the synthesis of data in a wide variety of clinical, social care and public health areas. As the post holder you will conduct research into methods for evidence synthesis to meet the needs of guideline developers, critically appraise the statistical aspects of draft guidelines, and contribute to the development and delivery of short training courses for guideline developers.

This role provides an opportunity to contribute to high impact methodological work, and directly influence the development of healthcare guidelines. Training will be provided in Bayesian network meta-analysis methods, and so this post would be suitable for a candidate who is just completing a post-graduate qualification in a relevant quantitative discipline. Experience with R and/or WinBUGS/OpenBUGS would be an advantage.

As the successful applicant you will join the Multi-Parameter Evidence Synthesis (MPES) research group (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/population-health-sciences/centres/cresyda/mpes/) in the Dept of Population Health Science in the Bristol Medical School, where the post holder would be based.

As the successful applicant you will be a capable, hard-working, motivated person, able to take responsibility and work on their own initiative as well as part of a team. As the post-holder you will be present at informal research meetings and guideline development meetings, publish research findings in journals, and disseminate findings at scientific conferences.

As the post-holder you will therefore possess excellent writing and communication skills. There will be opportunities for training and development through Bristol Medical School’s Short Course programme (https://www.bristol.ac.uk/medical-school/study/short-courses/). There will also be opportunities to teach on existing short courses at the University of Bristol, as well as training courses provided to NICE.

Appointment will be either at Grade I (Research Associate) or Grade J (Senior Research Associate) depending on qualifications and experience of the successful applicant.

For informal queries please contact: Prof. Nicky Welton - Nicky.Welton@bristol.ac.uk
