University of The Highlands and Islands

Principal and Vice-Chancellor

The University of the Highlands and Islands is seeking an exceptional leader for the post of Principal and Vice-Chancellor. This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding individual to lead this modern University partnership of 13 independent colleges and research institutions. The appointed candidate will build upon the University’s vibrant, diverse, cultural, intellectual and social community and will help the University to play an even greater role locally, nationally and internationally. With strong values of access to education, public service, excellence in research, integrity and a commitment to developing people at all stages of education, the new Principal and Vice-Chancellor will lead the evolution of the University to new levels of success, providing the highest quality further and higher education to satisfy all of our students and the wider communities in which we work.

The University of the Highlands and Islands is the only tertiary university in Scotland and one of only a few worldwide. Our reputation for world leading research in specific fields is enriched by our reputation for our locally based, community focussed campuses and our innovative approach to learning. Since becoming a University in 2011, we have grown quickly and now host 40,000 students across our campuses in Scotland. This is an exciting period for the University as we continue this growth and further expand our reach.

Strong candidates will display a keen affinity with the University’s commitment to widening access to education and will demonstrate a dedication to inclusion, integrity and accountability. They will be a strong leader, with a personality and outlook that enables them to connect with a wide range of people and embrace the cultural idiosyncrasies of our vast region. The ability to lead a complex organisation will be crucial and the candidate will need to communicate a strategic and inspiring vision for the university and its communities.
