Position Focus:

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will support research in multiple studies investigating substance use disorders, including neuroimaging studies, mobile health studies, and/or clinical trials. Required responsibilities of the Research Assistant include assisting in research design and planning, data collection and database management, participant recruitment and screening, scheduling, training and orientation of subjects, conducting structured clinical interviews, coordinating with the pharmacy and clinical staff, leading study visits, shipping subject materials, running neuroimaging test days, monitoring subject participation across studies, and ensuring appropriate follow-up and IRB protocol compliance.

The Research Assistant will collect behavioral, biological, neuropsychological, and brain imaging data, report on the status of research activities, manage and analyze datasets, coordinate work of students and manage the day-to-day activities of the lab. The Research Assistant will support statistical analysis of data and assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments. 

Essential Duties

  1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects.
  2. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design.
  3. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance.
  4. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Identifies and recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.
  5. May assist in preparing financial information and monitoring budgets.
  6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Expertise with database management. Strong computer skills including expertise with Microsoft Excel and other Office programs. Proficiency with Qualtrics. Demonstrated ability with SPSS (or similar statistical software).
Excellent attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills, in particular with regards to database management.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Prior human subjects clinical research experience and ability to work with a wide range of individuals, including clinical populations and minors, and maintain professionalism. Prior experience working with human subjects by phone and in person.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, in particular with study documentation such as IRB materials and study manuals of procedures.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to work in a fast-paced setting with multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Ability to work independently with self-initiative and problem solve.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science or related field. Experience overseeing research and support staff preferred. Familiarity with Linux and basic coding skills preferred. Familiarity with software such as R, Matlab, SPM/AFNI/FSL. Prior experience with clinical patients and neuroimaging research both strongly preferred.
