The University of Bedfordshire is an institution deeply rooted within the communities and region it serves, providing access to education for a vibrant and diverse population of 24,000 students. The University appears in the Times Higher Education World University rankings and was also ranked as one of the top 250 universities in the world under 50 years old in the Young University rankings. It is a modern university that offers a wide range of degree courses that are tailored to meet the needs of its students, providing them with transformational opportunity.  A very large proportion of our students are from families with no history of participation in higher education, and more than a third are mature returners to education.  Our students come from over 100 countries to study with us, making for a truly diverse student community. Improving student experience is at the core of the University’s mission, and the with the President of the Students’ Union on the Vice-Chancellor’s executive team, student voice is at the heart of everything we do.

The University itself contributes £300m to the local economy each year and is a major employer within the region. We pride ourselves on our strong civic and community relations and are committed to driving further prosperity within the region. We work with over 1,500 businesses delivering services and a range of knowledge exchange projects to drive innovation and impact locally. Last year saw the construction of our £40m Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) building, providing better facilities for students and driving our ambitious strategy to help the region enhance its STEM capabilities. The University of Bedforshire works with academic partners both in the UK, and overseas, to deliver a range of courses from foundation degrees to doctorates. These partnerships contribute significantly to both student numbers and financial income. In light of recent events, the University has responded effectively and made a swift transition to online programme delivery.

The University is now looking to appoint a Vice-Chancellor who will lead and develop the University’s next strategic plan following the culmination of our Strategy to 2020.  This strategy will enable the University to further enhance its commitment to, and reputation for widening access, student experience, teaching quality, research and knowledge exchange, and employability.  The University is looking to appoint a change agent with the ability to lead and implement a university wide change agenda.

Strong candidates will bring excellent people leadership and communication skills with the ability to inspire confidence in both our academic and professional services teams.  They will bring experience at a senior, executive level within an analogous context, alongside a commitment to the values and mission of the University and the conviction to promote this with energy and enthusiasm.  Strong candidates will have a track record of inspiring teams to perform at a high level through an inclusive and strategic leadership style. Candidates will bring experience of having led transformational change in a complex and challenging environment.
