The Faculty of Engineering & Technology is looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Statistical Methodology Development to work on a 6 month fixed term contract.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a cross-disciplinary team working on an innovative project to help transform early detection of diabetic eye disease in developing countries. This international research project entitled “Development of New Low Cost Point of Care Diagnostic Technologies for Diabetic Retinopathy in China” is jointly funded by The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) through the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).

You will be based in the Department of Applied Mathematics at LJMU and will act as the Mathematical and Statistical Developer for the project working closely with colleagues in universities, clinicians and industry. The position requires you to advise the project team on best practice in the development of statistical methods for decision support systems that can meet the goals of the project in addition to collaborating with other technical e-learning specialists within the Faculty and central University teams to disseminate knowledge and good practice.

A PhD in areas relevant to this post such as statistics, data science, computer science, or mathematics, is essential with experience in statistical modelling and a record of research and development in data analytics or statistical methods desirable. Knowledge and experience in Bayesian statistical methods, analytical methods for categorical data and classification methods with data management, data cleaning and preparing statistical data analysis plans is vital. 

The position will require you to have experience of working in open source environments and good knowledge of open standards, excellent software engineering skills, including programming in R and Python, computer simulations and data visualisation in additional to knowledge and experience of machine learning methods. Excellent project management skills, time management and organisational skills are highly desirable.
