About the position

A 2-year, full-time (100%) postdoc position is open for an outstanding candidate to work on the project “Deep Cellular Automata” http://www.nichele.eu/DeepCA.html . The candidate is expected to start in autumn 2020.

Duties of the position

The candidate will work with advanced neural network modelling. Duties include morphogenetic neuroengineering, in vitro electrophysiology and computational analysis and modelling by applying deep learning principles to infer and selectively influence key mechanisms regulating complex behavioural dynamics of biological neural networks in healthy and perturbed conditions. The candidate will be part of the Sandvig group for Integrative Neuroscience, INB https://www.ntnu.no/inb/sandvig#/view/about and work in close collaboration with the Nichele group at the Living Technology Lab http://www.nichele.eu/lab.html and AI Lab, Department of Computer Science, OsloMet, coordinating the DeepCA project. The candidate is expected to divide her/his time between the two labs as appropriate. Other duties include supervision of MSc and PhD students working on related projects at the Sandvig and Nichele labs.

Furthermore, the candidate is expected to be fully integrated within a wider collaborative network and actively engage in relevant outreach and dissemination activities, including presentation of scientific results at national and international meetings and conferences.

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowship is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. By the time of appointment (please see below) you must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in Medicine and Health Sciences or equivalent or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, talented, creative scientist with a strong theoretical and practical background in nanotechnology and specialization in bionanotechnology.

PhD in in Medicine and Health Sciences or equivalent (granted, or expected PhD defence by 15th October 2020)

Extensive experience with in vitro neural network modelling, including cell reprogramming and culture, microelectrode array (MEA) based electrophysiology and data programming and analysis (Matlab, Python)

A strong academic track record

Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English and Norwegian language skills

Strong motivation for the position

Preferred selection criteria

Priority will be given to candidates with documented experience working with modelling and studying self-organising neural networks as computational substrates, i.e. projects bridging neuroscience with computer science and neuromorphic engineering.

Salary and conditions

The employment period is 2 years (full time, 100% position)

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 542 400 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding  

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
