About the position

The Department of Education and Lifelong Learning, Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences, is looking for a candidate to fill a vacancy for a 3-year fully funded PhD position within the field of higher education and university pedagogy.

The candidate will be a part of the project Future Campus, together with Phd candidates at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture, and The Department of Architecture and Planning. NTNU’s R&D-program “Campus of the Future” https://www.ntnu.no/fremtidenscampus, is financing, initiating and compiling research relevant for NTNU’s campus development, as well as for other, major public development projects. In addition, the Campus of the Future will facilitate cooperation between various disciplines and researchers, to build a highly competent research community specializing in fields such as project management, the academic workplace, teaching facilities, and organization development.

The purpose of this PhD project, “Space, place and Identity”, is to explore how learning spaces  both physical and virtual are transformed into places for learning by teachers and students, and how such places afford or constrain university students’ professional identity development. It is the process through which students and educators assign meaning and purpose to learning spaces that create places for learning allowing students, educators, and other actors at various levels to work together, act out different roles relevant to their disciplinary field, reflect on relevant concepts and problems, and support each other in their learning processes.

Using a discursive perspective on identity, the project will emphasize how interactions, activities, and contexts shape and form identities. In addition, ideas from human geography about spaces and places will be used to connect identity development to physical and digital structures in higher education. The successful candidate will develop research questions that lie at the intersection between space, place and identity and the idea is that the project will draw on a range of methods for data collection, including sensor data from different learning spaces at NTNU, interviews, observations, and surveys. To address the research question a mixed methods research approach is proposed, leveraging qualitative analysis to explore participants’ experiences, and quantitative analysis to determine differences, similarities, and correlations in larger populations.

The successful candidate will be a part of the Uniped (University Pedagogy) research group and also be part of a stimulating research environment at the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning with over 20 PhD students in different fields of pedagogy and lifelong learning.
