The School of Geographical Sciences is seeking to appoint an 8-month fixed-term full-time pathway 2 Research Associate. The appointment starts in May 2020 or as soon as possible.
Working as part of the DIATOM ARCTIC project, part of the NERC Changing Arctic Programme in the areas of bioinformatics, genomics and cryosphere the postholder will:
- Extract DNA from a wider range of samples (e.g. soils, filters) collected in extreme environments
- Carry out both18S amplicon sequencing for taxonomy and metagenomic analyses for nutrient cycling
- Download and analyse publicly available data (e.g. NCBI, MG-RAST) from sea ice samples
- Computational analyses: develop tailor-made pipelines to analyse 18S amplicon sequence data, and genomic data from cryosamples
- Curate data generated in the project and make it available in NCBI and MG-RAST
- Coordinate work with project partners
- Write up analyses and results including manuscript for publication
