Position Focus:

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), provides supervision, administration and strong technical research skills and support within a basic research laboratory studying the immune cell development and blood cancers. This person will spend ~45% of time providing lab management and oversight of mouse colony with many genetically-modified mouse strains, and ~45% of time performing wet bench research including biochemistry, molecular biology, flow cytometry, analysis of animal specimens, immunology assays, and microscopy, in collaboration with lab members. The remaining ~10% of time will be focused on administrative work (i.e., ordering supplies, managing lab mouse protocols and licenses) as assigned by the PI. The ideal candidate will have the flexibility to work occasional hours on evenings and weekends (as needed), based on experimental design.

Essential Duties

  1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
  2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning
  3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
  4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
  5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning.
  6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
  7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
  8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Ability to independently plan and conduct multiple, complex, basic research studies. Strong technical and scientific abilities to perform complex laboratory experiments and procedures. Detail oriented both in experimental work and in record keeping.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to follow complex, multi-step protocols precisely, understand the scientific basis underlying each step of the protocol and independently troubleshoot complex, multi-step protocols with limited supervision.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Positive attitude, strong work ethic and the ability to work directly with others or to work independently (depending on the given task).

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to learn new techniques and experimental protocols. Excellent time management skills to manage multiple ongoing projects. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven ability to follow directions and work with minimal supervision.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Basic molecular biology skills.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Previous experience working in mouse colony management including handling, husbandry, and treatment. Experience with basic mouse DNA typing protocols. Experience with cell culture. Educational background in immunology. Strong experience with cloning, construct design, crisper/CAS9.
