About the opportunity 

The School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering is inviting applications for a postdoctoral research associate in Atom Probe Microscopy Frontiers, working at the Australian Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (ACMM) on the University’s Camperdown campus. The ACMM hosts world class facilities and is renowned for researcher excellence. The successful applicant will have access to an outstanding array of nanostructural analysis equipment, both within the Centre and at our partner nodes.

The aim of this project is to apply the microscopy technique of atom probe tomography to specimens that have been cryogenically cooled during preparation; opening new possibilities for the use of atom probe tomography in disciplines such as chemistry and life sciences. The new types of specimens that can be analysed include vitrified biological matter, liquids (solutions), surface molecules (ligands), and hydrogen. In the long term, the technique has the potential to lead to radical new discoveries in fields such as health and medicine, chemical processing and agriculture.

About you

  • a PhD or near completion in Engineering, Science or a related discipline
  • excellent proven skills in materials characterisation
  • knowledge and experience in one or more of the following techniques: atom probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD) and associated sample preparation techniques including focused ion beam (FIB) technology
  • proven ability to work autonomously and manage deadlines and project needs
