Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow in Planetary Spectroscopy and Space Resources in the Research Division for Earth and Planetary Science (Ref.: 500085), to commence on September 1, 2020 for two years, with the possibility for renewal.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Planetary Science, Geosciences, Astronomy or related disciplines.  Experience in remote sensing or infrared spectroscopy is essential and experience in applications to mineralogy, geochemistry or mineral resources would be an advantage.  They should also have a research track record including publications in peer-reviewed journals as corresponding author, and demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to co-supervise students and work as part of a closely integrated team.  Applicants with an interest in active space missions and technology development would be ideal.

The appointee will join the Laboratory for Space Research (LSR) (https://www.lsr.hku.hk/) which aims to carry out creative science while working with industry partners to co-develop technologies for current and future robotic exploration of the Solar System and beyond, and work under the supervision of Dr. Joe Michalski.  He/She will also participate in the projects of the Planetary Spectroscopy and Mineralogy Laboratory (www.clays.space/laboratory); and work closely with other members of the LSR, the Research Division for Earth and Planetary Science and the Research Division for Physics and Astronomy.

The appointee will have the opportunities to supervise graduate students (M.Phil. or Ph.D.), develop teaching skills and participate in grant-writing to secure additional funding if so desired.  Opportunities will also be given to participate in international conferences and workshops, mentoring, training, and other forms of professional development.  Overseas travel may be required.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date C.V. and a cover letter in PDF format.  They should also arrange 2 reference letters to be sent by referees directly to Dr. Joe Michalski by e-mail (jmichal@hku.hk).  Review of applications will commence as soon as possible and continue until July 13, 2020, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
