Job Details

York St John University

Pro Vice Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Transfer)

For almost 200 years, York St John University has transformed the lives of people from all backgrounds through the power of education. York St John is among the top 30 universities nationally for both overall student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2019) and for the percentage of graduates who are in education or employment within six months of graduating. Over the next few years, the University is embarking upon a series of major initiatives including a sister campus in London and a new Creative Centre opening on our York campus in 2021. The foundations have been laid for a bold and exciting future.

Under the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Professor Karen Bryan, the University is now seeking to recruit a Pro Vice Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Transfer). The new PVC will provide strategic and academic leadership to improve the impact and outcomes of research and knowledge transfer across the University. The appointee will be tasked with raising research ambitions and driving up research and enterprise performance in a university that has historically been defined primarily by its teaching profile. Recently, the University has invested significantly in the support and expertise to enhance its research output and has grown its postgraduate research students substantially. The appointee will lead the preparation and delivery of the REF, drive the impact and KEF agenda, and make sure the University is embedded in relevant local and regional endeavours.  The PVC will report to the Vice-Chancellor and be a full member of the small and newly formed leadership team.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader with their own personal research track-record and senior management experience gained in the Higher Education sector. They will be of professorial standing. They will bring significant experience of delivering excellence in research and knowledge transfer, and will have led complex change. Excellent knowledge of UK research policy and the KEF will be critical, as will a successful track record of cultivating relevant external relationships. Candidates must be able to foster a culture of inter-disciplinary team working, make tough decisions, and inspire a community around common aspirations.
