Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow (PDF)/Senior Research Assistant (SRA) at the Marine Futures Laboratory in the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) (Ref.: 500169), to commence on or before September 1, 2020, on a two-year temporary basis for PDF, or on a two-year fixed-term basis for SRA.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in marine ecology, molecular ecology and taxonomy, oyster biology, or other marine biology related disciplines.  They should have a demonstrated publication record of question-driven science in the field of marine biology, molecular ecology, biodiversity surveys, and/or ecosystem functioning research.   They should also possess a toolkit comprised of a solid foundation in field ecology and laboratory-based molecular techniques, as well as proven capacity to lead fieldwork expeditions.

The appointee will lead a funded research project in partnership with the Marine Futures Laboratory and The Nature Conservancy Hong Kong.  He/She will map remnant oyster habitats in Hong Kong and document the biodiversity associated with these habitats using both traditional and molecular techniques, and will be given opportunities to design and implement additional research into the biology and ecology of oysters and the potential for oyster reef restoration in Hong Kong.  The appointee will work at SWIMS facilities located on the HKU main campus and at Cape D’Aguilar.  He/She will also combine field and lab work, and will be responsible for mapping oyster habitats using remote sensing (drones), conducting field sampling of invertebrates and fish associated with oyster habitats, and using a combination of alpha and molecular taxonomy to identify these organisms.  Those with less experience will be considered for the appointment as SRA.  More information about SWIMS and the Marine Futures Laboratory can be found at http://www.swims.hku.hk and http://www.marinefutures.org, respectively.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  For SRA, the appointment on fixed terms will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 10% of basic salary.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date C.V, a cover letter, proof of research experience with evidenced outputs, and contact information of 3 referees.  Review of applications will commence as soon as possible and continue until June 15, 2020, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
