Executive Director, The Broad Center
The Executive Director leads the newly established Broad Center at Yale School of Management (Yale SOM) and has administrative and operational oversight over the center’s various activities, including degree- and non-degree programs, research and data infrastructure, and high-impact conferences and events. Reporting to the Dean and working closely with the center’s Faculty Director, the Executive Director develops and implements the strategy for the center to achieve its central objective to advance equity and excellence in America’s public schools by transforming district-level management- and leadership capabilities.
The Executive Director is a passionate and eloquent advocate for public K-12 education, an inspiring leader, a skilled administrator, an outstanding collaborator, and a champion of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). They will be an entrepreneurial self-starter who can navigate a complex organizational environment to quickly deliver tangible results while creating a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement. They will meet the highest standards of professional ethics and integrity, have superb judgement, and lead with courage and conviction. Depending on qualification, the Executive Director may qualify for a non-ladder faculty appointment (e.g. Lecturer or Lecturer in the Practice) at Yale SOM and a limited teaching role in the center’s degree and non-degree programs.
- Launch the Broad Center at Yale SOM in collaboration with the Transition Team, the Dean’s Office, and colleagues at the Los Angeles-based original Broad Center. Recruit core staff, define roles, build a high-performance team, and develop strong relationships with key units and departments across SOM and Yale.
- Develop the strategy for the Broad Center and set key milestones for its early year in close collaboration with the Dean of SOM. Communicate the strategy, objectives, and achievements of the Broad Center widely to key stakeholders, including the broader SOM and Yale communities, the Broad alumni community, as well as opinion leaders, senior practitioners, and policymakers in public education.
- Provide leadership for the Center’s degree- and non-degree program offerings, including coordinating the development of curricula, recruiting and selection of participants, and program delivery. Be the face of the program vis-à-vis participants and stakeholders. Work closely with faculty involved in the programs and support alignment of content. Support, as appropriate, the development of new case studies and teaching materials. In coordination with the Faculty Director, recruit and support non-Yale faculty, expert practitioners, and other guest speakers to contribute to the program. Identify coaches for students and alumni and oversee the coaching program including facilitating peer coaching. Engage community partners through organized field visits and integrative elements. Facilitate during program modules as appropriate.
- Lead the establishment of a Data Repository on Public Education Leadership and develop a robust infrastructure for cutting-edge, faculty-led research. Work to disseminate results to inform public policy debates.
- Design and oversee the execution of a communications strategy for the Broad Center, including a robust web presence, social media channels, newsletters and other publications.
- Build a community of alumni working/interested in the education sector in collaboration with Yale SOM’s Alumni Relations office. Lead efforts to engage the 900-strong Broad alumni community, support community networking and self-organizing, and coordinate professional development support for Broad alumni. Work to integrate graduates of the new programs at Yale SOM into the broader Broad alumni community.
- Develop relationships with leadership teams in school systems and districts, education-focused organizations and government agencies to recruit participants to Broad Center programs, and identify suitable career opportunities from program alumni in partnership with Yale SOM’s Career Development Office.
- Craft a strategy for key conferences and events, and through them engage scholars, policymakers, Broad alumni, and the SOM and Yale communities.
- Develop the annual budget for the Broad Center at Yale SOM, monitor spending, and report results.
- In close collaboration with the Development Office, prepare regular reports to the Broad Foundation on the Center’s performance on key metrics. Plan and coordinate meetings of the Center’s Advisory Committee.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s degree and at least 10 years of relevant experience, including at least 3 years in senior leadership roles.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Deep familiarity with the current state and challenges of public K-12 education in the United States, including the role of district-level leadership especially in large urban districts serving disproportionately poor students and students of color.

Demonstrable credibility in the public K-12 education leadership community.

Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and track record of building and leading diverse, inclusive teams.

Required Skill/Ability 5:
Superior demonstrated written and oral communication and presentation skills; ability to craft and articulate messages for various audiences. Ability to build and develop strong internal and external relationships and to advocate effectively on behalf of a new venture. High-level analytical skills and ability to deploy resources efficiently and effectively.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
First-hand experience in K-12 public education, ideally as teacher, principal, or district-level leader. Doctorate or other terminal degree in law, public policy, or education. Fund-raising experience. Familiarity with The Broad Center in Los Angeles and/or Yale. Global orientation; experience working across countries and regions, and fluency in more than one language.
