Deputy Director, Annual Fund
Reporting to the Director of Individual Giving, the Deputy Director will plan, execute and evaluate a comprehensive, strategic annual giving program for Yale Law School. The Deputy Director must be innovative, a sound development strategist, and will be responsible for leading a dynamic program that includes leadership annual giving, reunion giving, young alumni giving and law firm fundraising strategies. Will create and synthesize extensive quantitative information on donor behavior and return on program investment. Responsible for developing annual operating plans with challenging, but achievable goals and objectives. Responsible for recruiting, strategically mobilizing and coaching an extraordinary volunteer corps. Building relationships with key volunteers is expected to be done in a highly personalized manner, frequently through travel and face-to-face meetings. Supervise staff members and serve as a key member of the law school development team. The Deputy Director is expected to provide insight and perspective on key development issues in all areas.
Directs the efforts of the Development office and its staff to create and promote opportunities for communicating the needs and priorities of assigned departments, schools, and divisions to potential donors.
Directs development activities including cultivation and solicitation events, proposal preparation, donor visits with staff and faculty stewardship events, special exhibits and events, etc. that promote and recognize donors.
Directs and monitors development of prospect donor lists in collaboration with the research department, develops policies and procedures related to identification of needs and priorities of specific schools or department, creates opportunities for donors to support the needs of the various schools and departments.
Oversees and ensures schools are well-served in one or more of the following: prospect research, donor stewardship, development for major gifts, annual fund programs, and alumni relations function.
Directs, leads, coaches, and motivates development officers throughout the University to educate fundraisers and ensure that potential donors understand the opportunities provided in special events, stewardship programs, alumni programs, fellows programs, parent giving and student fundraising programs, work with student volunteers, administrators, faculty and staff to build awareness of these programs.
Directs development office staff in planning special events working with student volunteers in planning type of event, timing, venue, invitation and/or promotion, activities or purpose, and anticipated results in order to maximize staff, faculty, administrator and donor experience.
Supervises a staff of non-exempt employees; performs other duties as assigned.
- Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
- Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University.
- Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University.
- Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University.
- Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures.
- Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature.
- Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives.
- Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems.
- Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area.
- Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature.
- Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies.
- Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated familiarity with all aspects of annual giving programming, including segmented solicitation strategies, dynamics of donor behavior, goal setting and volunteer management.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Ability to track record of progressive achievement in fundraising or related metric-driven environment.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated strong communications and interpersonal skills. Excellent writing, proofreading, editing skills and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated ability to work with a positive attitude as an effective and collaborative team member. Willing to travel.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Graduate degree. Program management experience.
