RESEARCH OPTICS SOFTWARE ENGINEER, Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES)-Chung Lab, to develop computational algorithms for the instrumentation and operation of microscopes. Will collaborate with the principal investigator (PI) and develop high-end microscopes, computational tools, and algorithms for system operation, automation, and raw data processing; post-process and synthesize raw data from the specialized microscope into useful formats for presentation, visual inspection, and optimal analysis by varied machine-learning algorithms; provide informed feedback on the quality of acquired data and contribute significantly to the design and execution of future experimentation for numerous projects relying on specialized imaging; be responsible for finding and maintaining manufacturing contacts for the fabrication of the specialized research instruments; image large-scale biological samples and process the data; and maintain and upgrade custom-built microscopes, developing high quality open-source software for microscope operation. May coordinate and support multiple separate research-related projects simultaneously and perform independent research, attend and participate in lab meetings, work with the PI to develop imaging equipment when necessary, and perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED: a Ph.D. in optics, bioengineering, or physics; experience with MATLAB and LabVIEW; expertise with microscope development, lens design, software development, and imaging of biological samples; two years of software development experience; strong interpersonal communication skills; and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a research team.
