DEPARTMENT OF MERCANTILE LAW

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Corporate Law and related sub-fields of Corporate Law;
  • Teaching in a variety of other modules offered by the Department of Mercantile Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in order to meet the needs of the Department;
  • Conducting academic and scholarly research;
  • Developing new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field, enabled by an in-depth understanding of specialisation;
  • Handling the strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Promoting, planning, organising and managing academic and research programmes, as well as the Department’s research profile;
  • Recruiting and managing staff;
  • Managing all financial activities, including externally funded projects as well as conducting external funding initiatives;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader in the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Marketing and growing the Department on all levels;
  • and Aligning the Department with the strategic plans, goals and policies of the Faculty and the University.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor:

  • A relevant doctoral degree in Mercantile Law with a specific linkage to Corporate Law;
  • At least eight years’ teaching experience, including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least sixteen substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books of which six should have been published in the past three years;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision (masters or doctoral students) and academic citizenship as envisaged by the relevant promotion and appointment guidelines;
  • Proven managerial experience at a tertiary institution;
  • and A suitable NRF rating and/or identified by peers as an independent established researcher at at least national level (if the incumbent does not have an NRF rating the incumbent must actively pursue such a rating before the end of the first term).

Professor:

  • A relevant doctoral degree in Mercantile Law with a specific linkage to Corporate Law;
  • At least 10 years’ teaching experience, including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least thirty substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books of which eight should have been published in the past three years;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision (masters and doctoral students); and academic citizenship as envisaged by the relevant promotion and appointment guidelines;
  • Proven managerial experience at a tertiary institution;
  • and A suitable NRF rating and/or identified by peers as an independent established researcher with some international recognition (if the incumbent does not have an NRF rating the incumbent must actively pursue such a rating before the end of the first term).

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

Associate Professor:

  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Participation in national and international academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Proven ability to independently plan and initiate discipline-related research;
  • National and some international recognition in own field of expertise by peers in the discipline;
  • An established network of collaborative researchers;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; and Strong leadership and communication skills.

Professor:

  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Participation in national and international academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Proven ability to independently plan and initiate discipline-related research;
  • National and international recognition in own field of expertise by peers in the discipline;
  • Ability to prepare proposals and submissions to external bodies for funding and accreditation purposes;
  • An established national and international network of collaborative researchers;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; and Strong leadership and communication skills.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term if they are available for appointment and found to be re-appointable.
