About the position

We have a vacancy for a postdoc position in Environmental Biotechnology at Department of Biotechnology and Food Science (IBT).

The appointment has a duration of 2.5 years. The position is part of the project "RASbiome: Microbial management in RAS for sustainable aquaculture production", funded by ERA-NET BlueBio. In this project, we will investigate alternatives to microbial nitrification for improved management of nitrogen (N) compounds in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). In addition to improved N management, we aim at improving the understanding of role of microbes to chemical and microbiological water quality in RAS. This is a collaboration with NTNU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (IBM), DTU Aqua (Denmark), and Ghent University. The postdoc candidate will mainly focus on a microbial process for N treatment involving partial nitrification and anammox, and on the characterization of microbial community dynamics in commercial and experimental RAS. The experimental work will be performed in NTNU’s laboratories at IBT, IBM, and NTNU Sealab.

Information of the NTNU departments IBT and IBM can be found online at https://www.ntnu.edu/ibt and https://www.ntnu.edu/ibm

You will report to Professor Ingrid Bakke, IBT.

Duties of the position

  • The postdoc is expected to take the main responsibility for planning and implementing experiments involving continuously operated bioreactors and experimental RAS. In addition the work will include sampling, preparation of 16S rDNA amplicon libraries for high-throughput sequencing, and processing of DNA sequencing data.
  • The candidate will be responsible for reporting relevant research results to the project consortium, to attend project meetings, and to write and publish results in peer reviewed scientific journals.

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in biotechnology, environmental biotechnology or environmental microbiology, or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

The candidate must have hands-on, practical experience with continuously operated bioreactors and process configurations and/or with biological water treatment in recirculating aquaculture systems. Furthermore, experience with DNA-based molecular methods for microbial analysis is a prerequisite.

Preferred selection criteria

The ideal candidate has practical and theoretical knowledge on water treatment processes involving anammox and is experienced in all major steps involved in detailed characterizations of microbial communities (metagenomics, amplicon library preparations, data processing, and multivariate statistics). Knowledge to water treatment and fish production in RAS is considered an advantage. The candidate must have good skills in written and oral English.

Personal characteristics

The successful candidate should be creative and have strong practical skills. She/he should enjoy interdisciplinary research and working in teams, but should also be able to take responsibility for the progress of the project, to work independently, and act on own initiative.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement.
