The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEE) in the School of Engineering seeks a Life Science Research Professional 2 to join its team. The department is home to a large and active student body, excellent and dedicated faculty, and highly skilled and experienced administrative staff members who maintain high standards of excellence in a supportive, collegial environment.

You will support Professor Alfred Spormann’s research team performing complex lab experiments, maintaining detailed records of experiments and outcomes, interpreting and analyzing results, developing new research protocols and procedures, contributing substantively to the preparation of papers for publication and performing research and technical supervision of postdoctoral scholars and graduate students working in the lab.

Your Responsibilities Include:

  • Handling and growing anaerobic microorganisms, including methanogens and acetogenic bacteria. Performing microbial electrosynthesis experiments.
  • Perform complex research tasks based on expert-level knowledge of microbial electrosynthesis systems, and in particular microbial electromethanogenesis.
  • Isolate and refine cultivation of new anaerobic microorganisms in preparation for microbial electromethanogenesis.
  • Design and build an integrated electromethanogenesis bioreactor with new cathode materials.
  • Continue significant publication record of research findings as well as research protocol development in this emerging subfield by the PI’s lab and develop new publication projects for the research team.
  • Research and technical supervision of postdoctoral scholars and graduate students working in lab.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Masters of Science degree and four years of relevant experience. PhD and relevant experience preferred.
  • Advanced computer skills and demonstrated success in following through and completing projects.
  • Ability to cultivate anaerobic microorganisms.
  • Understanding of methanogens and acetogenic bacteria.
  • Expert-level knowledge of microbial electrosynthesis systems and in particular microbial electromethanogenesis.
  • Expertise in design, construction and use of bioreactors.
  • Strong publication record relevant to this field.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • PhD and experience with electromethanogenesis highly desired.
