Job Summary

The atmospheric chemistry research group at Caltech has long been a leader in the research on regional/global air quality and understanding the role of airborne particles in affecting air quality in urban area and climate. Our research relies on extensive experiments, model predictions, and instrumentation development. This position seeks a Research Scientist to manage and develop the atmospheric chemistry laboratory research at Caltech.

Job Duties

  • Performing chamber and flow tube experiments: including the design of experimental protocol and regular maintenance of instruments
  • Model development: (1) developing comprehensive models to explain/predict experimental results; (2) optimizing current atmospheric chemical transport models with machine learning algorithms
  • Instrument development: in-situ real-time particle-phase component detection at the molecular level, fast measurement of particle size distributions, efficient and mild particle capture techniques
  • Field measurement: maintenance/calibration of instruments including SMPS, AMS, CCNc, etc., data processing, and collaboration
  • Proposal preparation: draft and submit competitive proposals

Basic Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in environmental science and engineering, atmospheric science, or chemical engineering
  • A strong background of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and/or computation
  • Programming experience in MATLAB, Python, and/or Fortran
  • Effective written and communication skills
  • Leadership experience in research projects

Preferred Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in environmental science and engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with Solidworks, COMSOL, Labview, and mechanical engineering
  • Experience in designing comprehensive theoretical frameworks
