Part-time, 32 hours week, 7:45am-4:15pm-Monday, Friday, Saturday fixed and one additional weekday, includes holidays and recess days. May rotate to other shifts as necessary.

Position Focus:

In 1971, Yale University began a unique and historic experiment providing health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Now, 47 years later, Yale Health has more than 37,000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families who come from every state in the country and almost every country in the world.

Our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, built in 2010, is where our members receive most of their care. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, a 24/7 Acute Care Department, a 17-bed inpatient facility with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy. It houses our 150+ providers, including 111 primary and consulting physicians.

We are currently seeking an RN to provide direct care to Yale Health Members seeking unscheduled care in our Acute Care Department. In collaboration with our medical care teams, the RN provides high-level clinical assessment and triage to walk-in patients presenting in Acute Care as well as those calling in telephonically for medical advice. Role utilizes significant clinical decision-making and critical thinking skills to determine appropriate level dispositions for each request and encounter. Adheres to evidence based clinical protocols and documentation. Requires ability to provide acute care support and interventions to chief complaints of high acuity and work with a team of emergency/urgent care clinicians. Role includes high visibility to the university, providing care to visitors to campus, as well as key members of university leadership, faculty, staff and all members of the Yale community. Population is international and reflects a diverse community. Role includes working as a member of the health care team, including supervision and delegation of responsibilities to support staff within the scope of practice for each role. Serves as a preceptor to educate, orient and train new staff as required. Supports service excellence and adheres to strategic initiative and principles supporting Patient and Family centered care.

Essential Duties

  1. Provides appropriate acute clinical care to the Yale community, including students, non- students and all Yale Health members
  2. Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation while caring for every patient.
  3. Provides acute and on- going care advice for Adult and Pediatric patient/ family walk-in population. Role includes care coordination as appropriate.
  4. Ensures desired clinical outcomes are achieved through clinical excellence and adherence to evidence based triage protocols as well as Nursing standards of care.
  5. Achieves seamless delivery of out-patient care by involving colleagues, physicians, other clinical partners and staff to ensure commitment, alignment of goals, communications and cross-functional linkage.
  6.  Adheres to Yale Health patient safety standards in regards to medication administration, IV therapy, and all treatments and procedures performed in Acute Care.
  7. Compliance with regulatory initiatives.
  8. Works as a critical member of a care team and delegates appropriately based on a clear understanding of defined roles within the Acute Care setting.
  9.  Observes Yale Health HIPAA policy and confidentiality.  trains, orients new staff when indicated and assesses competencies of department staff.
  10. Demonstrates a holistic and caring approach throughout the nurse patient relationship, employing principles of patient/family centered care.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in nursing and minimum of 2 years of medical surgical nursing experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Previous clinical ability in a fast-paced, high volume unit. Outstanding interpersonal skills. Excellent communication and writing skills.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven evidence of professional skill and competency, including ability to multitask and prioritize.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated IV insertion skills.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Computer proficiency as it relates to the use of an EMR.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

CPR certification.

Required Licenses or Certifications Licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Connecticut.

Physical Requirements

Ability to ambulate and requires prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing and touch, moving/lifting patients of varying weights. Ability to use a telephone headset for long periods of time. Ability to work on a computer screen for long periods of time.
