Job Details

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Associate - Economic Geology within UCD School of Earth Sciences.

UCD School of Earth Sciences has recently attracted an SFI Research Professor, Professor Murray Hitzman, who is currently seeking a Research Associate to provide specialist technical support for a major project (Innovative Geological Research to Improve Mineral Resource Discovery and Sustainable Development) focused on deposit-scale geochemical studies.

The principal objective of the project is to generate data required for the discovery of new mineral deposits in Ireland and analogous deposits elsewhere in the world, and will focus primarily on the following:

(1) Navan Zn-Pb Deposit: Utilising geochemical techniques applied to mineral chemistry and isotopic systems to aid in understand of the deposit genesis along with identification of potential ranking tools for exploration.

(2) Lisheen-Galmoy Deposits: Linking geochemistry with current work producing 3-D models for theses deposits, this research will continue to define principal structural and stratigraphic controls on mineralization and the history of fluid flow and mineralization within the region. These models will become even more powerful when combined with data generated elsewhere in the Rathdowney Trend.

(3) Mineral chemistry applied to exploration targeting: This project aims to classify mineralogy and chemical signatures to understand basin fertility and fingerprint processes linked with mineralization. This will include, but is not limited to, mineral chemistry to understand productive systems in the CACB, chert and barite chemistry to understand fluid chemistry related to deposits in the Irish ore field and broader geochemical alteration studies to identify mineralizing fluid events in ore systems.

The candidate is expected to have broad technical expertise in laboratory analysis alongside expertise in economic geology, geochemistry and 3-D and 4-D modelling. The successful candidate will join a large applied geoscience research group in the UCD School of Earth Sciences at University College Dublin.

Salary range: €38,000- 46,000 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience

Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 23rd April 2020.
