Applications are now being accepted for a 28 hours per week, 7.5-month Postdoctoral Assistantship at the University of Bristol, on the ERC-funded 2015- 2021 project Beyond East and West: Developing and Documenting an Evolving Transcultural Musical Practice. 

This project facilitates integration of Turkish and Western instruments and voices through practical work that reinforces evolving modes of interaction between different musical traditions. 

Through a series of workshops, an ethnography to be included in a team-authored book, will trace the web of issues musicians must navigate.  

Main responsibilities: The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to maintain project archives, an interactive project website, organise grant activities, recordings and workshops, and contribute his or her own research to project outputs, including an instrumentation chapter on Anatolian folk string instruments for the project book. 

Required: PhD or near completion, with an MA or PhD in Ethnomusicology, Turkish language proficiency.  

Highly desirable:  experience archiving, recording, storing and cataloguing audio and video data; experience in analysing performance from a combination of notation, audio and video data.   

Other desirables: Experience transcribing interviews, experience with data analysis software, recording equipment, fieldwork, quantitative and qualitative research methods, organising events, editing, indexing and subtitling video footage. 

Expected start Date: 1 July, 2020
