Professor/Associate Professor in Engineering Geology of Soils

About the position

We have a vacancy for a Professor/Associate Professor within Engineering Geology of Soils at Department of Geoscience and Petroleum.

The professorship is administratively linked to the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP) at the Faculty of Engineering (IV), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The department currently has 24 professors, 12 associate professors, 33 adjunct professors/adjunct associate professors, and about 100 PhD and postdoctoral fellows. The department annually graduates about 150 students with a master degree.

The Department consists of the six research groups Engineering Geology and rock mechanics, Geology, Geophysics, Mineral production and HSE, Reservoir engineering and petrophysics and Well construction and production systems. The present position is organized in the research group of Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics.

The position reports to the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

  • the discipline Engineering Geology of Soils cover genesis, processes and technical properties of unconsolidated sediments, slope stability, hydrogeology, environmental geology (contaminated ground), ground source heating and cooling and the use of geological materials as concrete and road aggregate
  • teaching is given at both Master-and PhD-level and an important task will be supervision of students
  • the professorship will be responsible for teaching and research within engineering geology of soils and/or hydrogeology
  • the professorship is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff at the department
  • the professorship is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further development of the teaching programs including continuing education
  • the professorship is to supervise master’s students and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline
  • the professorship must agree to participate in administrative work

Required selection criteria

Professor:

The position of Professor within engineering geology of soils requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-2. 

  • candidates for the position need to have comprehensive knowledge of theoretical aspects and research, as well as practical experience of some of the issues mentioned above
  • academic competence at least at doctoral level is required within the subject area
  • the applicant’s research must be documented and of high, international quality, showing both breadth and depth
  • research activity and output must demonstrate an independent research profile and the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for professorial positions
  • strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within the subject area
  • the greatest emphasis is placed on research results undertaken during the past five years, excluding statutory leave
  • emphasis will be placed on the commitment to teaching, development of teaching material and supervision of students at the master and PhD levels, on the ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development, and in obtaining external funding for research within the subject area

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document

  • development in teaching and counselling of students over time
  • extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
  • participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment

Associate Professor:

The position of Assistant Professor within engineering geology of soils requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

  • the position of Associate Professor requires university education in engineering geology. In addition, academic competence at least at doctoral level is required within the subject area
  • emphasis will be placed on the commitment to teaching, development of teaching material and supervision of students at the master and PhD levels, ability and experience in initiating and leading research within the subject area
  • strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within the subject area. The greatest emphasis is placed on research results undertaken during the past five years, excluding statutory leave

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document

  • development in teaching and counselling of students over time
  • extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
  • participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment

For both positions:

You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and undertake supervision of Master and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

NTNU is committed to following evaluation criteria for research quality according to The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA. This means that we pay special attention to the quality and professional breadth of these works. We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

  • applicants with teaching experience from higher education will be preferred 
  • candidates with a broad network with Norwegian industry and/or public management within the field and with documented practical experience from projects related to Nordic geological conditions will be preferred

We offer 

Salary and conditions

In a position as Professor (code 1013) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 650 000 to NOK 1 050 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

In a position as Adjunct Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 600 000 to NOK 900 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
