About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Research Associate (Level A) to support Microscopy Australia research projects within the Australian Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis (ACMM). This role will  provide support with atomic scale characterisation projects that utilise advanced microscopy platforms including atom probe tomography and/or advanced transmission electron microscopy. The position will report to Prof. Julie Cairney.

In additional to supporting collaborative projects on Microscopy Australia infrastructure, there will be exceptional opportunities to lead research related to the development and applications of microscopy techniques, as appropriate to providing Microscopy Australia researchers with the best possible research infrastructure for atomic scale materials characterisation.

• a PhD in Engineering, Science, or a related discipline
• excellent proven skills in atomic scale materials characterisation
• the ability to work co-operatively with others and a commitment to understand, appreciate and service the technical requirements of users of the national microscopy facility
• knowledge and experience in one or more of the following techniques: atom probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD) and associated sample preparation techniques including focused ion beam (FIB) technology
• excellent communication skills and the ability to transmit research results into published research outcomes
• the ability to work independently and to communicate effectively with team members
• the ability to work effectively under pressure to meet research deadlines
• sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment
