About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Centre Manager who will be responsible for the effective and efficient operational management of the Australian Research Council Training Centre for Innovative Bioengineering (‘The Centre’, ‘CIBE’ or ‘ARCTCIBE’). This Centre is funded by the ARC’s Industrial Transformation Training Centres scheme. This scheme combines funding from the ARC, University and Industrial partners to promote partnerships between university-based researchers and other research end-users to train the next generation of highly skilled researchers to the Australian biotechnology workforce.

The Centre Manager will manage operation of the research, training and commercialisation work being undertaken and provide high level support to the Centre Director on a broad range of operational and compliance matters. The role provides management and implementation of the business operations including finance, physical and human resources, WH&S, contract management, compliance with policies and processes, identification of opportunities and risks, project leadership, monitoring and problem solving on critical issues to ensure effective and efficient operations are maintained within the Centre. Drawing on their expertise in research or business, the incumbent will play an active role in liaising with key stakeholders, managing the team’s researchers, partners, and students etc. (including recruitment), research planning, student training, coordinating commercially relevant research with the University department Commercial Development and Industrial Partnerships. Oversees operational budgets and prepares reports as required for management groups, external funding bodies, and governance committees. Ensures compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory controls and ensures a safe working environment for all staff.

• excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with a variety of matters
• ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
• excellent time and workload management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and achieve required outcomes
• proven management experience; together with flexibility, capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and environments and, when necessary, navigating through ambiguity
• experience in a research-intensive environment and demonstrated knowledge of and familiarity with University procedures, policies, and organisation
• financial literacy, experience managing budgets and controlling income and expenditure.
• working understanding and current knowledge of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation
• experience in preparing research funding, with the ability to coordinate large team-based applications across a diverse and multi-disciplinary team; and Proven evidence in research development, including identifying funding opportunities and working with external stakeholder

The School of Biomedical Engineering is a new school within the Faculty; it offers the Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Biomedical) and has a student body of almost 400 students. The School supports teaching and research activities across disciplines including tissue engineering, design of therapeutic devices such as bionic limbs for the injured and people with disabilities; external medical devices such as medical imaging equipment and augmented reality technology, as well as data-oriented solutions such as e-medicine, help doctors diagnose and treat patients.
