The Stanford Cardiovascular Institute is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 to join the Cardiovascular Institute Biobank (SCVI Biobank). We seek to recruit an ambitious and talented LSRP wishing to apply their molecular biology skills to identify therapeutic targets for cardiovascular diseases. The successful candidate will use cutting-edge technology, including induced human pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and genomics. Under the direction of senior scientists, the Life Science Research Professional will perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments.

The LSRP will also perform cell culture to reprogram patient-specific fibroblasts or blood sample into induced pluripotent stem cells for therapeutic purposes.  Upon successful scale-up, the LSRP will oversee the high throughput derivation of cardiomyocytes from patient-specific iPSCs. The candidate must be able to track and manage a very large number of samples. This position is fast paced and physically demanding. The responsibilities may include weekend and holiday reporting for cell culture responsibilities, as needed.

The candidate will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of molecular biologists, geneticists, and computational scientists. The project builds on recent initiatives at the SCVI Biobank to generate large numbers of human iPSCs. The aim of the project is to identify genes and pathways relevant for cardiovascular disease. The candidate will be responsible for optimizing a cellular model based on iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and characterizing these cells on the cellular and molecular level. In addition, the successful candidate will validate selected candidate genes in these cells using CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing methods.

Duties include:

  • Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.
  • Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.
