Reporting to the Director of Case Writing, at the Graduate School of Business, the Case Writer is responsible for writing and innovating educational materials and teaching notes for GSB faculty and assisting the director on assignments related to case writing, publication and distribution as required.  Some travel is required.

The Case Writer will work under the general direction of faculty or other management to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the assigned academic entity/program(s). Participate in entity/program strategy development, long-range planning, and partnership development. 

Your primary responsibilities include:

A.    Writing case studies and teaching notes under the direction of the faculty and the director of case writing:

  • Meet with faculty member and director and receive direction re: proposed assignment.
  • Work with the faculty member and director in setting up appropriate relationships and interviews with companies for the assignment.
  • Review case outlines and drafts with faculty and company representatives.
  • Work to case time lines and within case budgets.
  • Format cases and teaching notes to meet set standards for GSB cases.
  • Obtain releases from faculty and company representatives for case studies.
  • Develop case study and accompanying materials: faculty and company release, teaching note, case information form, and copyright permissions.
  • Revise, update, and improve existing cases as needed. 

B.  Supervise non-staff case writers (ex. students and temp writers) in the above as needed:

  • Train the case writer in the case writing process and introduce tools and resources for writing cases.
  • Meet with faculty member, case writer and industry representatives regarding the case as needed.
  • Assist the case writer in accessing GSB resources.
  • Review case outlines and drafts and provide comments to the case writer.
  • Review the final draft of the case and ensure that all case completion requirements are met and that the case conforms to GSB standards. 

C.  Assist the director in ongoing and periodic assignments related to case publication and distribution as required.  For example:

  • Reviews of cases for copyright and permissions issues.
  • Filing and publishing of faculty-written (but never filed) cases.  For example, the completion of the information form, requests for copyright permissions, writing and editing as needed and identification and resolution of outstanding issues (with company release, faculty release, copyright permissions, etc.).
  • Domestic and international travel are required.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  •  Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.
  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • Master in Business Administration, International Business, or Journalism preferred
  • This position requires a self-starter who has experience in interviewing, research and writing.  Experience in presenting narratives in other media is an asset. 
  •  Strong knowledge of the business school curriculum is required and an ability to interview, research, analyze and finally organize data into a presentation that focuses on a managerial decision or concept. 
  •  Must be an outstanding writer with excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.  Since raw material for cases tend to be confidential in nature and conversations to gain background knowledge about the situation to be developed may be quite sensitive, a keen sense of confidentiality and tact are essential.
