Job Summary

Under the broad direction of the Finance Director, the Senior Accountant is responsible for monthly closing, financial reporting, and reconciliation of the General Ledger of The Athenaeum in NorthStar system and the Institute system, Oracle. Assists in the preparation of financial statements and performs financial analysis as well as coordinating with accounting resources to meet the day-to-day activities and deadlines.

Job Duties

Overall, a member of the Accounting team for The Athenaeum is specifically responsible for:

  • The maintenance of the General Ledger, the reporting, and reconciliation of the internal and external Athenaeum accounts, and working with other Accounting Department staff
  • Preparation of the monthly close, including the taking of inventory, review and preparation of journal entries and supporting documentation
  • Preparation of the monthly financial package, including the Aging and Collections sections, the Board of Governor's report, and other customized ad-hoc reports
  • Perform complex reconciliation of General Ledger Accounts, capital accounts and the Intra-company accounts with Oracle, the Institute system
  • Support department in preparation of Internal Audit documentation, preparation of customized schedules and other documents for financial analysis
  • Support preparation of the departmental budgets
  • Respond to requests for information from other campus entities, including monthly reports, as well as quarterly and annual requests
  • Act as a backup to the Finance Director and support Accounting team
  • Perform any other duties assigned by management as needed

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
  • Four (4) or more years of experience in financial accounting
  • Experience with MS Office programs especially excel is essential
  • Solid knowledge of accounting principles is essential
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving ability, organizational, oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are also essential
  • The successful candidate must work independently with a high degree of detail and must be able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Seven (7) or more years of experience in financial accounting is a plus
  • Experience with Oracle, NorthStar, or Kronos (Timekeeping) a plus
