CHRIST’S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE

Research Fellowship (stipendiary) in Animal Parasitology

Christ's College invites applications for a stipendiary Research Fellowship in Animal Parasitology. The post is tenable for four years from no later than 1st October 2020 and is not renewable.  Animal Parasitology is to be interpreted broadly to include molecular, cellular and medical parasitology, together with host-parasite interactions and protistology.

The Fellowship is intended for researchers comparatively early on in their careers and offers an opportunity to carry out novel research in a stimulating academic environment. Applications are welcomed from researchers with a PhD in a cognate subject.  Candidates should not normally have held a stipendiary Research Fellowship at another Oxford or Cambridge College

The successful applicant will be an independent investigator. S/he will initially be affiliated to the established research group in the University that fits best with their area of interest, in either the Department of Biochemistry or Pathology. Affiliation to other Departments or Research Institutes within Cambridge University may be possible by mutual agreement. The Fellow will receive a research allowance of £5000 pa from the College and will also be encouraged to apply for independent research funding from appropriate bodies such as the Wellcome Trust and Medical Research Council.

In addition to pursuing research, it is expected that the Fellow will take a full part in College life and activities. They are encouraged to undertake some undergraduate teaching during Term, for which additional payment will be made at normal supervision rates. The Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body, eligible to sit on College committees and with the full privileges of a Fellow. Privileges include seven free meals per week and the Fellow may be allocated an office in College, subject to availability.  The stipend will be on the University’s single salary spine, between point 32 (currently £25,217) and point 40 (currently £31,865), depending on experience. Single accommodation in College may be available, but cannot be guaranteed.  Alternatively, a pensionable accommodation allowance (currently £4,574,) will be paid in addition to the stipend.

It should be noted that a successful candidate for a Fellowship who does not have an automatic right to work in the United Kingdom (including anyone who is completing a PhD at an overseas institution) will be subject to the visa requirements of the United Kingdom. The College will give informal advice and assistance but ultimately it will be the responsibility of the candidate to obtain the necessary visa.

Further particulars are available on the College website at https://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/vacancies-christs-college.  Applications should be sent to hrmanager@christs.cam.ac.uk to arrive no later than noon on Monday 20th April 2020 and should include a five-page research proposal, a curriculum vitae with details of qualifications, publications and experience, and the names and addresses of two persons who have agreed to act as academic referees.  Any submitted but unpublished work upon which the research proposal relies should be deposited in a preprint server such as bioriv (https://www.biorxiv.org/submit-a-manuscript) so that it can be evaluated by the selection committee.

Candidates must arrange for their referees to send their reference directly to hrmanager@christs.cam.ac.uk, so that references are received by the same closing date of noon on Monday 20th April 2020.

It is anticipated that shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview at the College on Wednesday 13th May 2020. Informal enquiries may be directed to Professor Nick Gay, njg11@cam.ac.uk
