Job Details

The School of Population Health & Environmental Sciences wish to recruit a full time Research Assistant in Patient & Public Involvement (PPI).  The successful applicant will hold a postgraduate degree (MSc or equivalent) in a relevant social science discipline and have experience in qualitative research methods.

This post would suit a recent graduate with an interest in supporting patient and public involvement in health and clinical research and our programme of research into the social science of citizen engagement.  We would support a post-holder to develop a PhD proposal for conducting an ethnographic study in this area of research, with a focus on the social, ethical and political implications of citizen engagement.

The post-holder will have responsibility for supporting PPI consultancy for the NIHR Research Design Service (RDS) London, providing general PPI advice in early stages of research study development.  The appointee will also contribute to research in PPI and the work of the ‘Citizen Engagement in Health Research and Implementation’ research group and the ‘Social Science in Urban Public Health Institute’ (SUPHI).

The applicant should have research training, skills and experience in a discipline relevant to health services research as well as excellent interpersonal skills.  Experience of conducting research using qualitative methods, and knowledge and experience of lay people’s participation in public systems and patient involvement in health research are essential.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract to 30th September 2023.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

The selection process will include a panel interview and a presentation.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) King’s was ranked 6th nationally in the ‘power’ ranking, which takes into account both the quality and quantity of research activity, and 7th for quality according to Times Higher Education rankings. Eighty-four per cent of research at King’s was deemed ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). The university is in the top seven UK universities for research earnings and has an overall annual income of more than £684 million.
