The John de Laeter Centre (JdLC) is the analytical instrument hub for Curtin University and houses over $35M in stare-of-the-art microscopes, mass spectrometers and other instrumentation.

Your new role

This position is a post-doctoral fellowship as part of collaborative project funded by the Australian Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) to develop new quantum technologies. The project will deliver a portable cold-atom quantum clock with a performance that matches that of the best clocks on the globe. The project will involve close collaboration with partner institutions including University of Adelaide, Griffiths University, University of Queensland, DSTG and the US Air Force Research Lab.

The primary purpose of the role is to develop nanofabrication methods using focused ion beam (FIB) technology in order to synthesise an optical grating structure for the grating magneto-optic trap (GMOT) component of a cold atomic clock. You will develop new or advanced research skills and competencies prepare publications in peer-reviewed academic journals and other scholarly dissemination.

The project will be undertaken in the JdLC at Curtin University with close collaboration with the researchers in the Physics. Professor Charlie Ironside and Dr William Rickard are the Curtin University Chief Investigators. Professor Andre Luiten from The University of Adelaide is the project lead.  

Principal Responsibilities

  • Conduct a specified programme of research and scholarship under the supervision and direction of your Chief Investigator(s).
  • Support your Chief Investigator and research group in the design and development of the research programme for the nanofabrication of optical grating using a FIB instrument.
  • Take part in training and professional development opportunities as required
  • Participate in the dissemination of the results of the research.
  • Engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of your research group.
  • Mentor and assist research graduate students when required.
  • Administration work associated with your programme of research.

You will bring to the role

  • PhD in Physics or Engineering or cognate discipline.
  • Demonstrated understanding of operational requirements for a successful research project and managing resources.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with FIB and Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM).
  • Demonstrated Nanofabrication experience.
  • Identify and fulfil academic writing requirements for target publications
  • Troubleshoot and customise experimental tools to respond to research questions.
  • Understand relevant scientific literature.
  • Ability to support a wide range of projects using FIB-SEM or other nanofabrication methods.
