About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A) to conduct research in a collaborative research team based at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. at the University of Sydney. This role will report to Associate Professor Charles Warren, and involves carrying out scientific research and preparing and presenting scientific results in papers and conferences, co-supervising undergraduate and graduate research students, assisting in the recruitment of research students and continuously working towards attracting new funding. Additionally, you will help to coordinate the research of different researchers and eventually apply for independent research fellowship and collaborative research funding. 

The successful candidate will take a leading role as postdoctoral fellow in the Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled “Phosphorus cycling and adaptation of soil microbes to phosphorus availability.” The project will use advanced isotope labelling and mass spectrometry techniques to investigate organic P cycling and the strategies soil microbes and plants use to cope with variation in P supply. The position will rely heavily on skills in biogeochemistry and will involve development and refinement of methods for quantifying pools and fluxes of P-containing compounds. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to carry experiments through to completion, including for peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

  • A PhD in biogeochemistry/soil science/soil ecology or another closely related scientific discipline.
  • Proven research ability, and evidence of self-motivation and research potential in biogeochemistry, soil science, analytical techniques (especially those for quantifying pools and fluxes), isotope labelling and mass spectrometry
  • Proven excellence in written and oral communications, interacting with a variety of researchers and stakeholders
  • Proven commitment to producing high quality work and a demonstrated track record of high-quality publications
  • Demonstrated excellence in research within a related area through published research in refereed journals
  • Proven ability to write and contribute to scientific research papers
  • Proven ability to design appropriate experiments to address the underlying research question, as well as experience in setting up field and laboratory experiments

About us

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) is a new school at the University of Sydney consisting of staff previously in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Molecular Biosciences, the Faculty of Veterinary Science, and the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment.

Its creation forms a major component of a broader Life, Earth, and Environmental Sciences (LEES) program of change that is designed to significantly improve the quality and efficiency of teaching. A key component of the LEES program includes a case to build new infrastructure which supports and enhances the capacity in Life, Earth and Environmental research and teaching.
