About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for multiple Postdoctoral Research Fellow opportunities to join the School of Maths & Statistics, reporting to and working closely alongside industry expert, Professor Sally Cripps. Sally, the Professor of Statistics and Director of the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre – Data Analytics for Resources and Environments (DARE) will be supporting you in contributing to a program of work aiming to make great leaps in transforming research, advancing scientific discovery and tackling the 21st Century grand economical and societal challenges: from secure/clean and efficient energy, personalised healthcare, sustainable agriculture and natural resources to smart cities and more.

You will also be provided with opportunities to pursue your own research interests whilst working alongside some of Australia’s best data scientists, industry partners and government agencies.

We are looking for talented data scientists to join a vibrant environment where collaboration between academia, industry and government agencies prevails. This position will focus on foundational research, working with our members to provide solutions to the complex challenges related to: data integration/fusion, ethical data science and decision making.

We are supportive of part-time and flexible working arrangements, which will be considered for these roles.

About you

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Statistics / Applied Maths, Machine Learning (or a closely related discipline)
  • Ability to supervise and mentor students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Demonstrated track record of peer reviewed publications
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages (Python, modern C++ or R), demonstrable use of other programming languages would be well received
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A willingness to assist in the supervision of PhD students
  • Demonstrated capability of mathematical and computational modelling of complex systems
  • Level C requirements - A track record of publication in leading international peer reviewed journals, with a commensurate citation impact such as JRSSb, JASA, Biometrics, Biometrika, JCGS, NIPS, CVPR, ICCV, ICML, ECML, AAAI, IJCAI, RSS, ICRA, IROS, IJRR, etc
