About the position

We have a vacancy for a Chemical Engineer at the famous Institutt for energi- og prosessteknikk at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway.

The overall objective of this project is to: (i) design a technical solution and system for using ultrasound to reduce air supersaturation inside the hydropower facility, (ii) test the developed system in small and large supersaturation scale laboratory settings, and (iii) with the aid of mathematical modelers, develop a numerical model that predicts the reductions in different types of hydropower facilities and under different saturation levels.

When power ultrasound (PUS) is used in liquid systems, it causes (i) an area of extreme ‘mixing’ close to the ultrasonic transducer (source), (ii) cleaning surface, and (ii) degassing surface. To accurately predict the ultrasound induced formation of air bubbles in supersaturated water is a difficult task as one must: (i) predict the accurate flow field to determine relevant time-scales and exposure times, etc. (ii) have a model that maps out the ultrasonic intensity together with local flow characteristics to the rate of bubble formation.

The PhD student will report directly to Professor Bruno G. Pollet AFIChemE FRSC, Head of the “Hydrogen Energy and Sonochemistry Research group” at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT), NTNU.

He/she will have internal (2) and external (1) co-supervisors:

  • Professor Ole Gunnar Dahlhaug, EPT, NTNU who is at the forefront of hydro turbine research.
  • Professor Odne S. Burheim, EPT, NTNU who is at the forefront of energy storage research.
  • Professor Jean-Yves Hihn, Université de Franche-Comté (France) who is at the forefront of ultrasonic engineering research.

Duties of the position

During the course of your PhD research project, you will be expected to:

  • Attend courses (inc. Health and Safety)
  • Perform literature review.
  • Perform experimental work.
  • Analyse and review generated data.
  • Present the data in a Scientific and systematic manner.
  • Write research papers and other scientific outputs with the supervisors and other researchers.
  • Occasionally, prepare teaching materials, teach (2nd and 3rd year Bachelor’s) and mark teaching assessments.

The PhD research student is expected to adopt a professional approach to the research degree programme, including:

  • good timekeeping.
  • observing deadlines.
