Job description

The School of Engineering at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is developing the future of engineering skills within the North West. Our new award-winning £35 million Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC) is a state-of-the-art facility, equipped to the highest quality standard, on the Preston Campus. UCLan is at the centre of one of the most intense engineering and manufacturing areas in the UK. The EIC provides an integrated space for teaching, High Performance Computing (HPC), research and direct links with industry. Our teaching and research are in great position ready to establish the University as one of the UK’s leading universities for engineering innovation by driving new discoveries and developments in emerging fields such as 3D printing, artificial intelligence, drone technology and The Internet of Things.

This role holder will support the Thermofluids Research team in the development of experimental and computational studies of the hydronic heat-exchanger test rigs in our new Thermofluids Laboratory. This work is closely supported by a leading boiler manufacturer. As part of the research work, the role holder will be required to prepare technical reports and journal publications. The role would involve regular visits to the industrial partner’s site for experiments and presentation of research work to the industrial partner.

We are looking for a motivated individual that is ready to develop their research skills. To be eligible for this role, you should have a minimum of a good honours degree in a relevant engineering subject.

This role requires the demonstration of the following:

  1. Good written and presentation skills
  2. Knowledge and experience of flow dynamics and heat transfer
  3. Knowledge of fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer and/or thermodynamics
  4. Creativity and aptitude for experimental work
  5. Strong analytical skills and good understanding of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  6. An understanding of ANSYS-Fluent and High-Performance Computing
  7. Good use of CAD (SolidWorks or equivalent)

The successful applicant will be flexible, enthusiastic and self-motivated to work alone and carry out a range of research tasks autonomously and work as part of a team. The ability to use a project management tool, such as Trello, is an advantage.

UCLan Values

Company

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) was founded in Preston in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.  Since those early days it has transitioned into one of the UK’s leading, modern universities with a student body comprising some 120 nations and an overall learning community approaching 38,000.

Throughout its development ‘Ex solo ad solem’, or in translation, ‘From the Earth to the Sun’, has been its motto – helping talented people from all walks of life to make the most of their potential. Staff at UCLan pride themselves on putting the needs of students at the centre of everything they do and in 2014 this shared core value was highlighted when the University achieved IIP Gold status.

In 2015 the Centre for World University Rankings placed UCLan in the top 3.8 percent of all worldwide universities and over the coming years UCLan’s £200 million Campus Masterplan development will create a truly world-class educational environment that will propel the University to new levels of excellence.
