Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health, the Associate Director of Industrial Hygiene and Laboratory Safety will be responsible for the organization and management of a broad range of environmental health and safety programs including laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, ergonomics, hearing conservation, hazard communication, and respiratory protection for University employees.

Job Description

Responsibilities include:
-Management of all industrial hygienist/lab safety specialists and indirect oversight for additional staff performing lab inspections within the department.   
-Supervise Penn's Chemical Hygiene Program that is responsible for the safe handling of hazardous chemicals in University research laboratories.
-Act on behalf of the Director of Environmental Health when needed.  
-Work closely with Facilities and Real Estate Services, school space directors, faculty and architects in laboratory design and renovation projects to ensure compliance with nationally recognized standards.  
-Assist faculty by writing research safety plans and provide safety documentation as required by NIH, DOE, DOD and other funding sponsors.  
-Develop new research safety protocols for emerging research issues.

Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree and over 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Professional certification as a CIH or CSP required.  PhD preferred.
