Professor / Associate Professor in Occupational and Organisational Psychology
Faculty of Health and Life Sciences

Northumbria University’s Department of Psychology is seeking applications from excellent candidates whose research complements or builds upon our existing strengths, and who possess the skills and abilities to develop our distance learning activity in line with the University strategy. Within our Occupational and Organisational Psychology team, we have interest and expertise in bullying, careers and wellbeing research and consultancy. The departments research themes are: Brain, Performance and Nutrition; Health and Wellbeing; Psychology and Communication Technologies; Cognition and Language; Perception, Evolution and Behaviour. The Department also plays a leading role in two university-wide multidisciplinary research themes: Integrated Health, and Digital Living.

You will provide expertise in occupational and organisational psychology to further enhance research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities. As a senior Academic colleague, you will assist the Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor to maintain, enhance and improve the University’s national and international reputation in your academic field. You must demonstrate continuing academic attainment and achievement and provide academic leadership (of your subject and associated colleagues), through active contribution to your discipline and to the life and work of the Faculty and the wider University.

This will include contributing to significant change within practice, the discipline, profession and/or community at regional, national and international level.

To be successful in this role you will have externally recognised research outputs of a quality that are internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour, and demonstrable success in securing research funding. You should also demonstrate academic leadership experience and strong standing with external bodies and networks in your field.  Ideally, you will be a Registered Occupational Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (or willing to work towards this) and be able to supervise Doctoral level qualifications which may include PhD, Professional
Doctorate or BPS Stage Two Occupational Psychology Trainees.

Our Departmental resources include: DEXA body composition scanner, 3DMD photogrammetry body scanner, 14-camera Vicon motion capture suite, SR Research and Tobii eye tracking equipment, NIRS, transcranial magnetic stimulation, an immersive virtual reality suite, a two-bedroom sleep laboratory, psychophysiologic assessment tools (e.g. GSR, EEG, EMG), and wet labs for taking human samples. Our popular Psychology courses cater to a vibrant student community of around 200 Foundation Year, 1000 Undergraduate, and 150 postgraduate students. We currently deliver a BPS accredited MSc Occupational and Organisational Psychology programme, undergraduate Business Psychology pathway and are developing a new distance learning version of the same programme (Stage 1 training).   The Department actively works with all academic staff to ensure teaching activity does not come at the expense of research time, and promotes engagement with sabbaticals to facilitate the development of grant submissions and collaborative projects.
