Job description

Full time - Fixed term contract - 30 months

Research Fellow in Natural Language Generation for Human-Robot Interaction with Edinburgh Napier University

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for 30 months to undertake research and contribute to the development of knowledge relating to natural language generation and human-robot interaction. Specifically, the post will help identify challenges associated with the incorporation of various data sources such as knowledge bases, visual information and sensor data, will investigate and develop multi-modal machine learning models for natural language generation and will perform evaluations via a series of experiments and task-based evaluations.

Common-sense- and Visually-enhanced natural Language generation (CiViL) is an ambitious three-year project funded by the UK's Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council. The project aims to develop domain-independent natural language generation models enhanced with Common-sense knowledge in order to transform the way humans interact with intelligent systems.

With over 50 academics, 1100 students, professional accreditation from the British Computer Society and some of the most impressive computing lab facilities in a UK university, the School of Computing is highly regarded and one of the UK's largest computing departments at the heart of Scotland's inspiring capital.

The School is organised in three subject disciplines: Creative & Social Informatics, Cyber Security & Networking and Software Engineering. Further information about Edinburgh Napier University can be found here.

The role

The Research Fellow will join the Nature-Inspired Intelligent Systems group, which specialises in optimisation, nature inspired computation and language technologies. The post includes a generous allowance for research training for relevant research skills (e.g. to attend summer schools) as well as transferable skills (training in communication). The research fellow will be expected to identify opportunities for research publications and contribute as a lead author, as well as to help with organisation of related workshops/meetings.

This post would be particularly suited to individuals interested in pursuing a career in natural language generation for human-robot interaction and dialogue. To review the role profile in more detail, click here.
