The Cyber Policy Center at the Freeman Spogli Institute seeks to hire an experienced, creative communications professional to join our team as our Communications Manager. As a new center, launched in 2019, the Cyber Policy Center is home to almost 40 faculty, staff and fellows across a thriving set of programs focused on the interdisciplinary study of issues at the nexus of technology, governance and public policy. Program areas address topics including cybersecurity, election security, misinformation, digital democracy and human rights, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Position Summary:  As an integral member of the Center's growing team, the Communications Manager leads and manages daily/weekly tasks and longer-term projects to craft the identity and promote the work of the Center and its programs, to both external and internal audiences. We are looking for an organized, strategic storyteller who can balance regular communications with new efforts to engage a wide audience.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Create content for the Center's website and social media channels
  • Produce online and print publications
  • Coordinate the production and posting of video/photos from our events
  • Identify and write stories, Q&As, blogs and wrap-up pieces
  • Seek to place stories with and respond to queries from journalists
  • Translate Academic Research into accessible and compelling material for the broader public

An ideal candidate should enjoy working in a collaborative environment and be comfortable working across a variety of programs with different needs, while understanding the need for a cohesive brand.  A candidate with a strong interest in cyber policy issues is preferred.

This is a 100% FTE fixed-term position. The term concludes two years from the start date, and may be extended based on program need and funding availability. For consideration, please submit a resume and a cover letter.

Job Purpose: Under minimal supervision, provide support in planning, coordinating, and implementing communication programs. Develop external written communications and design and coordinate media relations programs and efforts.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop, execute and oversee written communications of moderate complexity, including presentations, speeches, news stories, web content, talking points, and correspondence and social media posts.
  • Participate in regular meetings of key researchers with media relations needs to develop strategies and tactics for facilitating effective communications.
  • Assist in identifying and maintaining professional relationships with key press and community leaders.
  • Assist in preparing content for internal or external newsletters. Understand email and digital content distribution.
  • Identify individuals/groups to attend and/or speak at public meetings or other events.
  • Coordinate media, community or government relations, and ensure logistics and preparations are handled.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Familiarity with cyber issues and brand development preferred. Prior experience working in a university environment a plus.
