Stanford’s Division of Allergy, Immunology is seeking a Research Scientist who has expertise in cellular and molecular immunology and next generation sequencing based analyses (e.g., RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq, Repli-Seq). Prior experience with telomere biology and induced pluripotent stem cell biology and/or small molecule/repurposed drug screening is also highly desirable for working on the project.

This individual will work closely with the P.I., Dr. David Lewis, another Research Scientist, a research assistant and potentially graduate and undergraduate students. This candidate should be able to conceive and execute a well thought-out series of experiments, focusing on studies related to defining the pathogenesis of Schimke Immuno-Osseous Dysplasia (SIOD). This is a monogenic immunodeficiency due to biallelic mutations in the SMARCAL1 gene, which results in genomic DNA replication defects and secondary transcriptional perturbations and telomere shortening. The lab focuses on defining how these DNA replication defects lead to the T-cell immunodeficiency and other characteristic phenotypes in these patients. The candidate would assist in the guidance of postdoctoral scholars, graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory. Coordinating their research activity with other laboratories at Stanford and elsewhere that are involved in these projects is essential. The Research Scientist will be expected to participate in the preparation of grant proposals, progress reports to grantors or philanthropic foundations supporting the research, and will be a coauthor or first author (depending on their contribution) for publication of research results.

Duties include:

  • Design research approaches for a major portion of research project(s), including background research, experimental design and execution, problem-solving as required.
  • Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches.
  • Perform complex lab experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods.
  • Assist with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants.
  • Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project.
  • Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section. May be a co-author or first author on publications depending on their role. Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; propose new research directions based on new advances discussed in literature.
  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.

Required:

  • PhD degree in related scientific field and five years of related experience, or master's and ten years of related experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles, especially in regard to basic cellular and molecular approaches for cellular and molecular immunology and next generation-sequencing based techniques; prior work with induced pluripotent stem cells and/or small molecule/repurposed drug screening is also highly desirable.
  • Expert level knowledge and skills in field of science related to research project.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately and record thoroughly.
  • Developed project management skills.
