We seek experienced candidates for a new Development Officer to join the Major Gifts team. This position requires experience, sensitivity, diplomacy and the ability to operate independently while representing Stanford Medicine.  If you have the strategic skills necessary to simultaneously balance prospect identification and solicitation, proposal development, and coordination of internal support activities while building donor centric, meaningful, relationships, then this position is for you.  You will work with staff, faculty, volunteers, and other university constituencies to establish and maintain stellar relationships on behalf of Stanford Medicine.  You will report to the Director of Major Gifts within MCD that leads the Generalist fundraising team.

“Generalist” fundraisers on the Major Gifts team work to build a robust portfolio of approximately 100 prospects with capacity ratings between $500K and $9.9M. Their discovery work is most often with prospects who become known to us by having interacted with Stanford Medicine.  Because Generalist major gift officers are focused on donor interest, they partner with our “Specialist” major gift officers, who staff faculty and priority areas in order to provide expert information to the rest of the team.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Developing solicitation goals, objectives and strategies for development projects and/or specific donor populations.
  • Managing an active portfolio of major gift-assigned prospects to cultivate, solicit and steward their support. Tracking solicitation efforts and progress.
  • Assisting in the assurance of appropriate tracking/reporting of grateful patient fundraising and other cultivation/solicitation efforts.
  • Developing relationships with current and prospective donors leading to gifts in the $250,000 - $10,000,000 range.
  • Enhancing relationships between current and prospective major donors and the school’s faculty, dean, staff and volunteers.
  • Establishing ongoing relationships through personal visits, phone calls, and meaningful contacts.
  • Working with MCD staff, donors, volunteers, and other university staff to assist in establishing and maintaining relationships with all university constituencies.
  • Leading a wide range of fundraising activities, including providing stewardship, identifying new prospective donors and volunteers, maintaining an active level of contacts, coordinating volunteer fundraising efforts and facilitating relationships between potential and current donors and volunteers.
  • Attaining a working knowledge and understanding of the medical research and research priorities. Staying informed on current university initiatives and activities.
  • Developing relationships of mutual respect and trust with faculty.
  • Working closely with other development colleagues to align program goals with the overall giving goals of the university's development organization.
  • Preparing faculty for donor meetings, responding to donor requests for written proposals, and engaging with volunteers to assist with cultivation/solicitation where appropriate.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years+ of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Proven ability to meet fundraising goals with a growing confidence in managing and balancing donor/faculty/lay leader relationships
  • Ability to be at ease with faculty, top executives and community leaders, gaining their confidence and respect
  • Ability to work well with staff members regardless of position in any office hierarchy; and willingness to share credit
  • Ability to keep a sense of urgency in gift discussions, is open, achievement-oriented and confident
  • Ability to take information from many sources and distill it to core messages that are communicated to different audiences

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class driver’s license
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
