Job description

The School of Psychology is seeking to appoint a Lecturer to undertake research and teaching in the area of Mental Health or Clinical Health Psychology. The School runs a doctoral training programme in Clinical Psychology and, due to recent senior appointments, now has a very active research group encompassing mental health and clinical health psychology, with particular strengths in trauma, and chronic physical health conditions. Two prestigious professorial appointments, Professor Cherie Armour (psychological trauma and mental health) and Professor Kevin Vowles (chronic pain and clinical health psychology) position the School as a hub for globally excellent research in this field. Both Professors Armour and Vowles are internationally renowned in their areas of speciality and will take an active role in the mentorship and research capacity building of the newly appointed lecturer. The School has also recently launched a research centre that will encompass and support all of the research activity in this area, the Centre for Improving Health-Related Quality of Life (CIHRQOL), https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/psy/Research/ResearchThemes/hce/cihrqol/

A new MSc in Clinical Health Psychology will begin in 2020-2021, and there is a planned expansion of intake on the Clinical Psychology doctoral training programme. The Lecturer will be joining a thriving research environment with excellent facilities, technical support, and senior research mentors. We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer who will complement existing research in Mental Health or Clinical Health Psychology. The post holder will provide research supervision to clinical doctorate trainees and contribute specialised undergraduate and/or MSc teaching. The post holder does not need to be a qualified Clinical or Health Psychologist, but must have expertise in an area that would enable them to supervise some research projects of our clinical doctorate trainees.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Undergraduate honours or postgraduate degree in psychology or closely related discipline. Have a PhD in a relevant area of research in psychology or closely related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant research experience in mental health or clinical health psychology (e.g., psychological trauma or chronic pain), with established research interests that are sustainable and that complement and enhance existing research activities within the School.
  • Strong theoretical and empirical background in mental health or clinical health psychology.
  • A strong publication record on mental health or clinical health psychology in peer reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career and sufficient to contribute to the School's next REF submission to UoA4 at 3* and /or 4* level.

Queen's University Belfast is one of the prestigious Russell Group of UK research-intensive universities in the UK and Ireland, combining excellence in research and education with a student centred ethos, for our 24,000 students and 4,200 staff, funded through an annual turnover of some GBP 300m.  As a driver of innovation and talent, based on excellence and global strategic partnerships, we offer generous employment terms and underpinned by excellent lifestyle benefits including opportunities for family friendly working and support for wellbeing.

The School of Psychology works hard to ensure that it provides an inclusive and supportive environment for all staff and students. Many School staff have family or caring responsibilities and the School has implemented policies which flexibly support their needs. The School recognises and respects the diversity of its staff and students whether in relation to their ethnicity, cultural background or sexual orientation. Receiving an Athena Gold departmental award confirms our commitment in promoting gender equality and makes Queen's a recognised leader in equal opportunities.

Our five core values - Integrity, Connected, Ambition, Respect, Excellence - are shared by our staff and students, representing the expectations we have for ourselves and each other, guiding our day-to-day decisions and the way we behave as individuals in an international organisation.
