POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER ON MODELLING UPTAKE OF SILVO-PASTURAL SYSTEMS IN THE COLOMBIAN AMAZON
Fixed Term
Edinburgh
£30,825 - £36,178 per annum
REF: ACF/R/044/19

SRUC is unique in Scotland and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe.  The Rural Economy, Environment and Society Department is one of the largest groupings of socio-economists working in the rural, agricultural and land based sectors in the UK.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to join a multi-disciplinary team focused on the behavioural and economic modelling of Colombian farming populations funded by the UK Newton Fund.  Silvo-Pastural Systems – integrating livestock and woodland systems - have been identified by the Colombian Government to meet ambitions for its Green Growth Strategy.  The purpose of this project is to understand the barriers and consequences to upscaling of these systems across the Colombian Amazon region.

Building on an initial assessment of risk preferences within a small sample of farmers in the Caquetá region of Colombia the post-doctoral researcher will: synthesise and identify policy interventions that engender upscaling of systems, conduct empirical research with farmers to elicit their risk preferences, in particular in terms of environmental compared to economic preferences, and develop economic models to understand the land use consequences of these interventions.

The post-doctoral researcher will be supervised by Professor Andrew Barnes at SRUC but will engage and work with a multi-disciplinary team of ecologists at the University of Reading and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, and sociologists at the University of Bristol.  We will also work in collaboration with researchers at CIAT and the University of Amazonia in Colombia.

You will have a PhD with a strong quantitative or economics component, with a demonstration of experience in risk preferences, farm or regional level modelling, and collection and analysis of survey data.  You will have the ability to plan and organise work independently and as part of a team; and write research presentations and papers. Understanding of the Spanish language will be advantageous.

This research position will be based in the Rural Economy, Environment and Society Research Group at SRUC, Kings Buildings Edinburgh but with some field work and visits to Colombia.

The salary will be in the region £30,825 - £36,178 per annum. The post will be full time for a fixed term until 31st March 2021. Interviews will be held in Edinburgh.

For an informal discussion please email Andrew.Barnes@sruc.ac.uk
