STANLEY ELMORE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

FURTHER PARTICULARS
Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge wishes to appoint an active researcher to a five-year, fixed term Stanley Elmore Research Fellowship in Biomedical Sciences, commencing on 1 September 2020.  The Fellowship is named in honour of Alexander Stanley Elmore (1867-1944). The Stanley Elmore Research Fellowship is a non-renewable career-development post.  The person appointed must have completed their PhD and will ideally have Postdoctoral research experience and a proven commitment to undergraduate teaching in the general area of biomedical sciences.  The Stanley Elmore Research Fellow will be required to supervise undergraduates in the Natural Sciences BA degree course (“Tripos”) and/or in Medicine for 80 hours over the course of the academic year, and contribute to undergraduate Direction of Studies and admissions for the Natural Sciences Tripos.  They will also undertake research in the general field of biomedical science based in an appropriate department of the University.

The Natural Sciences Tripos is the largest undergraduate degree course at Cambridge: the College typically admits around 20 students per year (of whom just under one half specialise in biological Natural Sciences), alongside 10 for Human Medicine and 2 for Veterinary Medicine.  Information about the Cambridge undergraduate degree courses can be found on the University’s Admissions web pages: https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses

Biomedical science is a successful and vibrant subject at Sidney, with active subject societies in both the Natural Sciences and Medicine Triposes, in addition to outstanding support from a distinguished community of alumni.  The ability to teach one or more of the most popular options in the first two years of the course (Biology of Cells; Evolution and Behaviour; Physiology of Organisms; Biology of Disease, Cell and Developmental Biology; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) is a definite advantage.  A full list of biological options in the Natural Sciences Tripos is available at:
https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/natural-sciences#biological-sciences-options

The stipend is paid on a scale ranging from point 34 to 36 on the University’s single salary spine (currently £26,715 - £28,331) and is dependent upon experience.  Progression through the range is discretionary. 80 hours of supervisions is included in the stipend, extra payment will be made for any teaching over 80 hours at the standard University supervision rates. Directing studies will be remunerated at a fixed stipend of £575 per annum, with £97 per student in addition. Time spent interviewing and doing outreach work for the College will be paid by the hour. Prior permission of the College Council is required for other paid work, and all emoluments received must be disclosed to the Council. Council may reduce the stipend in the light of other income.

The stipend is pensionable in the USS Pension Scheme. The Research Fellow will enjoy the usual amenities of a Fellowship including dining privileges.  Single residential accommodation is provided rent-free, with a service charge payable to cover ancillary costs.  Alternatively, should the choice be to live in private accommodation, there is a non-pensionable annual living out allowance of £4,615 for 2019/20 (rate reviewed annually). In addition, Research Fellows may apply for research grants of up to £1,120 per year (rate for 2019/20) to cover research expenses, including books, and an entertainment allowance of up to £395 per year.  The Stanley Elmore Research Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body of the College.
