Job Summary

Install and provide operational support for a wide variety of networking technologies, including routing and switching, wireless networks, and voice over IP. 

Job Duties

  • Monitor and update our internal trouble ticket system on a daily basis
  • Troubleshoot maintain, upgrade and provide solutions to basic hardware/software problems
  • Monitor system resource utilization and performance using applications such as Statseeker, RANCID and other SNMP-based tools.  Recommend enhancements, upgrades and changes to achieve optimum performance levels
  • Install, upgrade, maintain and troubleshoot network devices (switches, routers, wireless access points, etc.) on campus
  • Interact with campus Internet providers CENIC and Los Nettos, including reporting and troubleshooting upstream network issues.  May also attend and participate in technical committee meetings
  • Maintain awareness with new network technologies and determine their suitability for Caltech's environment
  • Develop network maps, troubleshooting guides, and operational procedures
  • Participate in the design and implementation of an integrated infrastructure supporting the convergence of voice and data services
  • Complete training modules and demonstrate progress towards achieving Cisco CCNA certification
  • Work on special projects as needed

Basic Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree or a minimum of 2 years of experience as a network engineer
  • Ability to complete training activities on network design, configuration, installation, evaluation, problem resolution and project management within a 12 month period
  • Ability to obtain, with mentoring and support, technical knowledge of data and voice network services such as wireless networks, VoIP, configuration management, IP address management and network monitoring
  • Ability to learn Cisco IOS and ArubaOS
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including developing, writing, and reviewing technical documents
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities
  • Be customer-oriented and comfortable working with a user base with widely varying computer skills and support needs
  • Be able to respond to off-hours incidents as necessary
  • Able to lift moderately heavy equipment up to 25 pounds
  • Some travel in-state and nationally may be required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Caltech campus environment
  • BS degree in Computer Science or a related field
