About the opportunity 

In this role, you will be responsible for the functioning of the biomolecular NMR instruments within Sydney Analytical, the University’s premier research facility dedicated to material, chemical and biological analysis. The primary focus will be providing specialist instrument support and training for research activities within the University and with external users. This encompasses both those in research institutes and those of commercial enterprises. The position also includes full-service and self-service operations, development and implementation of new research capabilities and protocols, depending on user needs.

  • applies expert technical experience to the maintenance and operation of specialised NMR hardware, software and associated ancillary infrastructure across the Magnetic Resonance node; develops cutting edge capabilities on current and future instruments; contributes to planning and installation of future NMR developments
  • provides expert advice, sound technical research support and assistance to researchers, students and other technical staff working in the laboratory, including the Facility Manager, Operations Manager and Academic Director
  • manages the laboratory workplace, ensuring that the research requirements of the work area are met effectively
  • supports the collection of research and analytical data; prepares initial analyses and offers insights for inclusion in preliminary and research publications; contributes to complex research projects that push the boundaries of new experimental techniques in key areas of focus for user groups, under the broad guidance of the Facility Manager, the Academic Director and in collaboration with other Magnetic Resonance staff.

About us

The mission of Sydney Analytical is to provide a core set of state-of-the-art Vibrational Spectroscopy, X-ray and Magnetic Resonance (NMR and EPR) capabilities, research infrastructure and support capabilities for Drug Discovery, and associated services to researchers. In doing so, Sydney Analytical services clients both internal and external to the University. Internal researchers from across the University have access to facilities and expertise in accordance with the facility’s role in providing a University-wide shared research infrastructure. Services are also provided to external researchers and industry. The Sydney Analytical Magnetic Resonance node houses seven modern spectrometers ranging from 200-800 MHz, including cryoprobe capabilities on 600 MHz and 800 MHz instruments. Sydney Analytical is in the process of expanding its capabilities and capacity in magnetic resonance with significant investment in the coming 3 years..
